SWITCH FROM ONE-USE PLASTIC BAGS

Use a re-usable bag or Bag For Life when you shop. Strong bags like the blue bags from IKEA are perfect for shopping, can fold tightly and last for ages. Lightweight tote bags made of hemp are also ideal.

SHOP AT ZERO WASTE SHOPS

These shops supply us with unpackaged food and other commodities where we can refill our own multi-use containers - even if they are plastic.

SWITCH TO MILK DELIVERIES

Supermarket milk comes in one-use plastic containers and there are literally millions sold every day. Whereas milk delivered to your doorstep comes in glass bottles - with zero plastic in sight!

CHOOSE FOODS WITH LEAST PACKAGING

Many supermarkets over-package their produce for their own convenience. Carrots, for example, are often sold in plastic bags, adding to food and plastic waste. All farm shops sell produce loose.

LEAVE PLASTIC IN SHOPS

Take your own multi-use containers - particularly to supermarkets - and leave the excessive plastic containers for the store to deal with. Imagine the effect if 50% of us did this!

CARRY YOUR OWN WATER FLASK

Rather than buy your water in a plastic bottle when out, fill your own flask at home and carry it with you. Here you're saving plastic and money!

Commercial Buildings

CARRY YOUR OWN COFFEE CUP

Collapsible cups - in silicon or stainless steel - are ideal for takeaway hot drinks on the move - and can be easily cleaned and packed away neatly - or even hooked on a belt.

PICK UP LITTER WHEN OUT WALKING

Carry a lightweight bag when you go out, to collect the odd bit of litter you find on your path. It not only gives you a good feeling - for cleaning the environment - but encourages others to do the same

JOIN A BEACH CLEAN WITH OTHERS

You can do this on your own but it's better to do it with a team of others. Clearing a section of beach is uplifting and can be great fun working with others on a first-class mission.

REPAIR FIRST - REPLACE SECOND

Rather than thinking first about replacing something, give a thought to using a Repair Cafe - wherein up to 75% of items are successfully repaired. This not only saves on plastic - but other materials and money too!

AVOID MICRO-BEADS

These tiny plastic particles are in products such as toothpaste and shower gel. They are so small that they bypass sewage filtration systems and go straight into the sea, where they can be eaten by marine life.

SWITCH TO REUSABLE FOOD WRAP

Instead of wrapping your home-made sandwich lunches in cling film, switch to reusable food wrap. It comes in a range of colourful designs - and more importantly, won't end up in the ocean!

TAKE CARE WITH YOUR TEA BAGS!

Tea bags often contain plastic - but plastic-free bags are available, in cardboard packaging instead of plastic. Better still, consider switching to tea leaves, which - unlike tea bags - can be composted.

WRITE LETTERS - AND COPY THEM TO US

Make your feelings known to your Servant MP and CEOs of retailers who over-use plastic. We're creating a database of observations/suggestions/comments - please share yours - and the responses you get!

AVOID PROCESSED FOODS

Processed foods are full of micro-plastics. Cutting down on ultra-processed foods - such as take-aways and anything that comes in packaging - is a good way to reduce consumption of these tiny pollutants.
